I recently watched a webinar called “Take it to the NEXT level with Branching Scenario!” from the folks at H5P. The webinar was well organized and offered two demonstrations, with the basic demo first followed by the more complex use case (Vygotsky and Bandura would be proud!).
What is H5P?
H5P is a free and open technology, licensed with the MIT license, that helps all kinds of learning experience designers and content creators make interactive, engaging, and mobile-friendly web content.
H5P Integrations and content types
H5P integrates with popular learning management systems (LMS) and content management systems (CMS) including Moodle (its a block in Moodle), WordPress (plugin), Blackboard, Drupal, etc.
H5P provides a wide range of content types, such as interactive videos, quizzes, presentations, games, and of course branching scenarios, which can be created and embedded into online courses and websites. There is however a learning curve which I climbed effortlessly with the H5P interactive content in this post , but have since struggled with some of the more complex content types, including creating a branching scenario. Because of my own struggles with some of the features I was very excited to find this webinar.
Demonstrating branching scenarios with H5P
In the webinar, the presenter, Jelena Milinovic, a lead designer with H5P, shares two easy to follow examples of how to use H5P to create branching scenarios. The first example demonstrates how to use the branching scenario content creator to design basic course navigation. In the second walk through Jelena demonstrates how to use the full branching features to create a fully interactive, branching scenario.
I have to admit, now that I’ve seen it demonstrated it is really easy to use!
Why aren’t more organizations using H5P?
I’m not sure why more organizations aren’t using H5P over the more expensive course authoring alternatives. I’ve brought it up at several orgs where I’ve worked or contracted for. I was not successful at any. Perhaps it’s a reluctance to adopt open source technologies? Perhaps I didn’t advocate hard enough?
I think it’s time to get over that. H5P has been around, like Moodle (my other favorite open source technology), for over a decade and is available as a free open source application and as software as a service (SaaS) for those who insist on paying.

Generative AI and H5P

Seriously, watch the video to learn about Smart Import and integrating generative AI tools like ChatGPT. I’ve used the processes demonstrated to create content and checks for understanding in a quarter of the time I usually spend on tasks like these.
