Since hearing Meghan Trainor’s – @Meghan_Trainor – multi-platinum single “All About That Bass” I haven’t been able to get it’s catchy lyrics and melody out of my head. At first listen it a song about body image. In researching the lyrics I found that the original inspiration was about the musical bass line which supports the bottom of a song. In an interview published in Billboard magazine, Trainor says:
You know how the bass guitar in a song is like its “thickness,” the “bottom” /blockquote>
From there it’s a small step to begin thinking about how leadership is all ’bout that bass too.Leadership is about substance
Yeah it’s pretty clear, I ain’t no size two
But I can shake it, shake it like I’m supposed to do
‘Cause I got that boom boom that all the boys chase
All the right junk in all the right placesBeing a leader of substance means being solid. It means being the anchor that holds the ship steady in a storm. It means being a person of substance. Leaders come in all shapes and sizes and the best of them have substantial presence when needed.
Leadership is about acceptance
But I’m here to tell you that,
Every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the topSuccessful leaders know and accept themselves. They are comfortable in their own skin. They know they are not perfect and that other people aren’t perfect either. That isn’t to say that leaders don’t strive to be better at what they do or expect others to improve where needed. It does mean that they are ok with who they are inside and know that the people they lead are just as human as they are.
Leadership is about integrity
I see the magazines working that Photoshop
We know that shit ain’t real
Come on now, make it stop
If you got beauty beauty just raise ’em upThe best leaders speak the truth and point out untruths when they see them. They speak up for inequity and feel empathy for others even if it’s unpopular. That’s integrity. That’s the bass.
Because you know I’m all about that bass,
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all ’bout that bass, ’bout that bass, no treble
I’m all ’bout that bass, ’bout that bass, no treble
I’m all ’bout that bass, ’bout that bassIf you are a leader who is leading from the top, middle or bottom – sing it out loud, get your boogie on and be all ’bout that bass!
